Georgian Period Bodice Brooch / Brooch

I normally try to steer clear of damaged pieces but you can't actually notice this from the front - even close up it's a struggle - the picture above is magnified and taken at a couple of inches away so this is still a wearable piece and I won't tell if you won't!.
The damage is historical and I'm guessing within a couple of years of purchase as the exact same gold has been used to repair it as used to make it.
To me it's part of it's history, I wonder how it happened? It actually looks like it may have been pulled sharply from the fabric when closed - ripped from a bodice!

It dates from around 1830 and you will find an almost exact copy (but having matching earrings and the bodice brooch has a suspended piece) on page 272 colour plate 68 in the late Shirley Burys magnificent book Jewellery 1789-1910 - The International Era Volume 1

It reads: An English Bodice Brooch......of about 1835 in stamped gold set with carbuncles (almandine Garnets cut en Cabochon). Light and cheap to make, the gold components were shaped, polished and set before being fitted together. The stones (stone in this case) are mounted in closed and foiled collets with flat claws. The articles (article in this case) are unbacked but the brooch has an applied locket fitted behind the central stone.

In this case the outer frame is actually backed and the applied locket has woven hair inside it also has tiny seed pearls set into tall collets. I love the contrast of the rich gold with the Garnet on this piece - it extremely attractive.
It fastens with a secure steel pin that extends beyond the brooch itself.

Measures: 1 and 3/4" (4.5cm) long x 1 and 3/8th" (3.5cm)
Weight: 7.8g
No marks - tests as 18ct

This fabulous brooch would make a great pendant
